Update from United Methodist Open Door, May 2026

United Methodist Open Door is committed to transparency and to serving those most in need in our community. We would like to share an update regarding recent developments involving our organization.

You may be aware of Second Light, Wichita’s multi-agency homeless services center designed to provide shelter and coordinated, wraparound support. Since its inception, Open Door has participated in conversations about a potential partnership that would have included relocating our Homeless Resource Center (HRC) to the Second Light campus. Second Light was initially funded through American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds provided by the City of Wichita.

A portion of the Wichita sales tax vote on March 3, 2026, was intended to support homeless services, including Second Light’s operations. When that initiative did not pass, Second Light experienced a significant funding shortfall and was required to make immediate and difficult adjustments to its service model.

After careful consideration, United Methodist Open Door has decided not to enter into a formal partnership with Second Light or relocate the HRC at this time. This decision was guided by several key factors:

  • Financial sustainability: Ongoing concerns about long-term funding created substantial financial risk for our organization.
  • Facility suitability: The proposed space, with limited renovations, would not adequately support the operation of a successful day shelter based on our decades of experience.
  • Service alignment: Changes to Second Light’s service model, through no fault of their own, would limit access for many individuals we serve daily, particularly those with the most complex needs.

Our mission remains unchanged. United Methodist Open Door will continue to provide essential services through our Homeless Resource Center, as well as our food and clothing ministries. We also remain open to collaboration with community partners as needs evolve.

We are dedicated to working alongside others to ensure that every individual in need has access to compassionate, effective support.

We are grateful for the continued trust and support of our community. Serving more than 32,000 individuals each year would not be possible without you.
